THE END IS NEAR: 24 Hour Misery Jam

A game jam based on Psalm 4:2
THE END IS NEAR Jam page

It Came from the West

Concept: “Fulfill the 4:3 Misery by interpreting dice rolled over the world map.”
Content:
Delivers on its promise and incorporates the dice’s spatial positions in addition to their numerical results
Writing:
Contains some excellent, atmospheric descriptions and some really clever mechanics for interpreting the rolls that include some ingenious metagame actions and consequences
Art/design:
A more traditional visual style and layout but still very on-brand and aligned with the content
Usability:
Must be printed unless you want to roll dice on your screen; in the latter case, I recommend heavy, sharp, pointy metal ones

IV:III

Concept: “A tiny system for MÖRK BORG when rolling 4:3.”
Content:
A blank map of the Dying Land to track the progress of the prophesied fires
Writing:
Includes instructions for use and a dire warning
Art/design:
Elegant and visually engaging in its contrasting aspects
Usability:
A clever material (rather than mechanical) tool

Kingdoms Burn

Concept: “Gorgh will drag this world kicking and screaming into oblivion. His champion needs but one thing to regain his strength.”
Content:
A scenario centered on a suit of armor seeking to reunite with its rightful wearer
Writing:
Features plenty of lore along with stat blocks for the antagonist, its final form, and its followers
Art/design:
Primarily monochrome images and text with shocks of yellow to add emphasis and direct attention
Usability:
Like the antagonist, something of an empty vessel waiting to be filled

Sleep Now in the Fire

Concept: “Although they went down, the fire of their spirits still raged on. And they came to burn it all and make you sleep in a fire.”
Content:
Contains stats and lore for fire-based undead and items
Writing:
A balance of descriptive and technical text, with the two folded together for the items
Art/design:
Relatively traditional layouts with illustrations that support the entries’ concepts
Usability:
The RATM reference is a free bonus

Smoke, Steel & Sinew

Concept: “The Spawn of the Black Forge hath come. Their flesh weeps inside pyg iron cages, spurred forth by the infernal engines of their burning brimstone hearts.”
Content:
A trio of machine-themed enemies

Includes an overview, tables for origins and encounters, and individual descriptions and stat blocks
Art/design:
Fits a lot of content onto a single spread without compromising comprehension or usability
Usability:
A toolkit for small adventures or campaigns set amidst an all-out invasion

The Ash Peddler

Concept: “A harbinger of fire & purveyor of potions”
Content:
An ostensibly benign NPC peddling 8 fire-themed concoctions
Writing:
Brimming with conflagratory character
Art/design:
An intuitive layout with Mörk Borg colors and typographical flourishes
Usability:
Some more elaborate rules but nothing particularly cumbersome

The Benevolent Ignoramus

Concept: “A titan decided to steal a powerful artifact to try and save the Dying World. Sadly for the Dying World this titan was not particularly bright or agile.”
Content:
An ironic take on the mythic fire-bearing savior archetype; also includes stats for ancillary antagonists
Writing:
Well written and filled to the brim with dry wit
Art/design:
Intended for easy reading with color to add visual emphasis and focus
Usability:
Designed for a longer-running plot arc rather than a one-shot encounter

The Dead Moon

Concept: “Wherever you are… seek shelter. For the next 24 hours, the Dead Moon shall bestow this dreadful land with even more madness.”

Rules for surviving (or not) under the Dead Moon and a table of 20 terrible things

Full of strange, grim imagery
Art/design:
Uses a variety of visual tactics to delineate sections for easy reference
Usability:
Can be used as a grim adventure seed or a survival horror scenario

The Demesne of Conflagration

Concept: “The Endless Sea burns. Within it, a flaming fortress of stench and grotesque hordes. Venture within before all blackens and burns. Free the Lich Queen Aoiva from unrepentant misery.”
Content:
A fire-themed mansion crawl
Writing:
Extremely concise but with enough bizarre detail to fuel the imagination
Art/design:
Good use of color to guide focus and to add character in key places
Usability:
Pamphlet is nicely laid out for quick, easy use in-game

The Ever-Burning Prophet

Concept: “Their zeal for SHE is matched only by the raging inferno which engulfs them.”
Content:
An unusual enemy with no attacks, but dangerous in combat nonetheless

A relatively conservative layout with Borgy colors and typographical choices
Usability:
Includes a table of heretical ravings to add some verbal character to encounters

The Fire and the Horde

Content:
Catching and extinguishing fire; creating collective stat blocks for groups of various sizes led by exceptional specimens
Writing:
Concise delivery of mechanics in both cases
Art/design:
Laid out and designed for easy reference and use with a background that supports both halves of the concept
Usability:
Fire rules are simple to use in the moment; creating a horde is best done in prep rather than at the table

The Fireman

Concept: “As fires spread from the west,a figure is seen on the precipice of the flame. Nobody knows what he hides under his helmet.”
Content:
A straightforward but challenging foe
Writing:
Concise description and equally concise stat block

Concept: “Born in the center of the worst conflagrations in the West, its touch incinerates the righteous and the innocent.”
Content:
What appears to be a sentient, enraged explosion
Writing:
A quick sketch of lore and a standard stat block
Art/design:
The collage definitely communicates the concept
Usability:
Straightforward to use, and can provide a recurring enemy for bomb-inclined parties

The Horde from Beyond

Much more creatively oriented rather than formal

The Phoenix King

Content:
A mighty foe leading an army of minions (with the ability to create more of them and itself)

A perfect blend of Mörk Borg and cartoon aesthetics
Usability:
Your game will never be the same after this. Fair warning.

Tulivuori the Impulsive

Concept: “Where once loomed Bergen Chrypt, now seeps the yellow-red rage of Tulivuori.”
Content:
A volcanic adversary, literally
Writing:
Includes an anti-stat block with rules for converting followers and gifts bestowed
Art/design:
Illustration and other graphic elements convey an eruptive, dynamic energy
Usability:
Not your typical monster

Ucalegon

Concept: “A reckless unguided horde of desperate terrified people seek refuge. The endless flames of their homeland push them to the only place that remains untouched by flame.”
Content:
Some lore (tying into the Box of Shadows title), 4 classes, 3 items, and a merchant who sells them
Writing:
Provides copious historical background for the game components; classes in particular have some grim humor but are on the lighter side regarding features and personal background
Art/design:
Efficiently ordered and laid out with economical color and typographical choices alongside interesting and atmospheric images
