FÖLK-LORE Jam

A jam for adapting folklore to Mörk Borg
FÖLK-LORE Jam page

A Fight with a Kelpied Knight

Concept: “Along the road one night, you come across a dripping wight.”
Content:
He bids a hero to attack and knock him off his horse’s back
Writing:
This rider’s writer had too good a time when crafting all his well-wrought rhyme
Art/design:
And for portraiture, he shows a knack, in purple, yellow, green, and black
Usability:
Upon defeat, he turns to brine; now beat this beast or fall supine

A Fire of Luscious Secrets & Ambrosian Truths

Concept: “Feed my fire, o traveler, / And one revelation shall be yours.”
Content:
Burn something (anything) in exchange for an answer to one question
Writing:
A mix of poetic flavor and prose rules
Art/design:
Limited typographical and color choices create visual coherence and interconnection amongst parts
Usability:
Simple with only one formal mechanic

A Pestilence of Maths

Concept: “A plague of madness spreads across the countryside: people hopelessly repeating strings of numbers and words until their head bursts into flames and they die in shrieking violence.”
Content: Includes an ad hoc sanity metric, random travel events and tower rooms, and a whole lot of exploding heads
Writing:
Clean and characterful with dry gallows humor and well-chosen, interconnective details
Art/design:
Effective and appropriate graphic choices that interact cleverly with the concept
Usability:
Packs a fair amount of tension and grit into a relatively small package

A Spluttering And A Splashing

Concept: “Ancient legends tell of a creature with supernatural powers that is able to stop the apocalypse.”
Content:
A 12-room semi-aquatic dungeon
Writing:
Well written with lots of character and atmospheric details
Art/design:
Primarily uses the clean, clear style of Rotblack Sludge
Usability:
Layouts and design make this simple and easy to run

A Weasel’s Funeral

Concept: “Travelling down the road, you come against a procession of weasels in mourning.”
Content:
A funerary procession of weasels
Writing:
A short description of the scene and stats for the weasels
Art/design:
Relatively minimalist but presented well for use at the table
Usability:
Best not to disrupt their mourning

Afanc

Concept: “A great beast, part beaver, crocodile, and demon”
Content:
A vengeful amphibious behemoth
Writing:
A straightforward stat block with artfully composed lore
Art/design:
Well laid out with detailed art that leverages stark contrast and organic lines to strong effect
Usability:
Don't litter and you're probably safe

Aggrieved Village Guardian

Concept: “These totems were erected to protect the village from demons and evil spirits. After centuries of thankless service […] They became the very things they were meant to defend against.”
Content:
A supernatural guardian turned on its wards—and everyone else
Writing:
Some quick background and mechanics
Art/design:
Text cant and illustrations convey a sense of the monster's movement
Usability:
Mechanics are split by descriptive text but still distinct and easy to reference

An Cailleach

Concept: “She is the lichen-covered rocks and the mountain peaks. She is the bared earth covered with snow and frost. She is the Deep Ancestress, veiled by the passage of time. And you were born under her influences.”
Content:
A class closely aligned with the substances and cycles of the natural world
Writing:
Delivers context and mechanics with loads of folkloric flavor
Art/design:
Includes some very personal art—maybe the first tattoo used as an illustration in Mörk Borg?
Usability:
Class features are more thematically than mechanically oriented (but still pretty useful)

Betty Blackteeth

Concept: “Her decaying skin, stringy hair, nails and teeth are stained by the peat-blackened waters where she prowls.”
Content:
Jenny Greenteeth adapted to the swamps of the Greater Galgenbeck area
Writing:
Descriptive text provides character and tactics; stat block includes a chain of nasty Specials
Art/design:
Builds the isolated, suffocating atmosphere that defines the monster
Usability:
This is why you shouldn't play in swamps (or maybe why you should when you're playing Mörk Borg)

Big American Men

Concept: “A lost land ruled by four treacherous kings from American folklore”
Content:
Borgified lore, stat blocks for encounters, and ancillary mechanics
Writing:
Recasts famous folkloric figures as sinister, larger-than-life villains
Art/design:
A rich array of design choices and layouts unified by the Mörk Borg aesthetic
Usability:
GMs will need to flesh out the concepts, but provides plenty of inspiration for them to do so

Bird of Ill Omen

Concept: “‘They are often seen before Miseries befall the world, leading many to believe them to be agents of Verhu, Nechrubel, or some other malevolent entity.”
Content:
Relatively benign; may transfer Omens from players to the GM, and feathers allow PCs to re-roll low Omen rolls (at a cost)
Writing:
Mostly mechanics with concise description of behavior
Art/design:
Monochrome silhouette suits the monster concept
Usability:
Additional in-game lore, inspiration, and hooks provided on the product page

Black Poodle

Concept: “Eyes like embers of hell that pierce deep inside you. The BLACK POODLE taunts its victims – attacking only when it is provoked.”
Content:
A cunning, monstrous hound that can induce fight, flight, or freeze responses in PCs
Writing:
Describes sinister behavior alongside stat block and Specials
Art/design:
Gets a lot of aesthetic mileage out of a relatively limited set of elements
Usability:
Definitive proof that poodles are jerks

Black Shuck

Concept: “Prowling the shadows near gallows, battlefields, and other sites of violent death, Black Shuck is a foul omen.”
Content:
A supernatural portent of impending death (yours)
Writing:
An even split between descriptive text and mechanics
Art/design:
Text is also visually split by the central image of Black Shuck
Usability:
Easy to use but difficult to kill, making him ideal to hound your players with

Bloody Cap

Concept: “A murderous goblin from the borders of Grift and Graven-Tosk, found where scenes of tyranny and vile deeds have befallen the lands.”
Content:
Stats and description of the monster along with a short dungeon lair
Writing:
Does a good job conveying maliciousness and viciousness
Art/design:
Use of color reinforces the creature’s theme
Usability:
Some text may be difficult to read, particularly when printed in black and white
